Quick verdict
Buy the OXO Stainless Steel Sink Caddy when several wet tools need a stable countertop home and you are willing to empty its drip tray. Choose an in-sink holder if keeping the counter clear matters more. A caddy organises a drying routine; it does not remove the need to clean the tools and holder.

Which option fits your routine?
| Choice | Choose it for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| OXO countertop caddy | Brushes and sponges together without mounting | Uses counter space and needs manual draining |
| In-sink holder | Keeping the worktop clear | Takes basin space and depends on its mounting fit |
| Existing suitable holder | A few tools already stored neatly | No reason to upgrade solely for a steel finish |
Measure the landing area, not just the sink
OXO lists the caddy at 5.6 by 3.8 by 5.5 inches, with a removable divider and a drip tray that has a pour spout. The important fit is the flat area where its base will sit, including room to lift it and empty water.
Use a paper rectangle to mark the footprint beside your actual sink. Check that the faucet, backsplash and everyday dishes still have clearance. A caddy that fits only by blocking your usual washing space is not solving the right problem.
The divider is useful when your tools suit it
Separating a brush from a sponge can make both easier to retrieve. Removing the divider gives a larger open compartment, which may suit a different combination. Compare the tools you own with the available space instead of assuming that every tall bottle or soap pump belongs inside.
If you keep just one sponge, a larger freestanding organiser can be unnecessary. For several tools, it may replace scattered items with one location. The value comes from that change, rather than the number of compartments listed on the box.
The drainage is collected, not automatic
Food & Wine’s hands-on caddy comparison liked the OXO’s versatility but found that the draining area required attention. Its tester wanted more automatic drainage and kept an eye on the interior for water and grime. That is a meaningful drawback for someone expecting a maintenance-free accessory.
OXO’s tray catches drips for you to empty. Place it where that small task is easy to remember and perform. We have not timed drying or tested bacterial levels, and do not treat ventilation holes as proof that a wet sponge becomes hygienic by itself.
Countertop storage avoids a mounting problem
A freestanding design makes sense when you do not want suction cups or adhesive inside the sink. You can reposition it without choosing a mounting patch. The tradeoff is that the whole unit remains on the counter when you want a completely clear surface.
An in-sink caddy can be the better choice in a cramped kitchen if its mounting system suits the basin. Compare where dishes pass, where a large pan rests and where wet tools can drain. The best location is specific to your sink, not to a product’s styling.
Cleaning access is a buying feature
The divider and tray create useful access, but you still have to clean their surfaces and let parts dry. Follow the supplied care directions; do not assume every steel-and-plastic accessory has the same dishwasher permission.
Consider whether the finish is worth maintaining beside your faucet. We have not tested corrosion resistance or appearance after months of soap splashes. If your existing holder already drains and cleans easily, steel alone is a weak upgrade argument.
Who should buy—and our verdict
Choose the OXO for multiple tools, a suitable flat landing area and a routine that includes emptying the tray. Skip it if counter space is the main shortage or a small existing holder already works.
Our verdict is a useful organiser with a visible maintenance cost. The countertop design wins for easy placement and flexible compartments; an appropriate in-sink holder wins when preserving the worktop is more important. Buy for tool fit and drainage habits before choosing a finish.
