Quick verdict
Choose a blackout roller blind for a compact window treatment when its mounting and edge coverage suit the window. Choose curtains when you can extend coverage beyond the opening. Blackout fabric does not, by itself, eliminate light around the edges.

Two products can both use blackout fabric yet leave very different amounts of light in a bedroom. The difference is often at the sides, top and bottom of the installation. Measure the complete window area before choosing between a roller blind and a pair of curtains.
What changes with each option?
| Priority | Roller blind | Curtains |
|---|---|---|
| Compact appearance | Fabric rolls away near the window | Panels need stacking space beside it |
| Coverage outside opening | Depends on blind width and mounting | Can extend past the opening with suitable hardware |
| Daily window access | Raise blind clear of handles | Move panels aside; allow room |
Measure for coverage, not just fabric width
An inside-mounted roller can leave gaps between the fabric and the window recess. Check the manufacturer’s actual fabric width, overall mechanism width and installation clearances. They may not be the same measurement. Outside mounting can increase overlap, but only if the wall, trim and hardware allow it.
With curtains, measure the rail or rod position and the area the closed panels must cover. Allow for the fullness specified for the curtain style; a flat piece of fabric matching the window width is not the same as properly gathered panels. Top, side and center gaps can still admit light even with dark, dense fabric.
Installation can decide the purchase
IKEA’s TRETUR is one example of a cordless blackout roller blind. Check the instructions for the selected size and mounting surface. A product being cordless does not make its brackets installation-free. In a rental, confirm permission and choose hardware suited to the actual wall or frame.
Curtains also need compatible supports unless suitable ones are already installed. Include the rod or rail, brackets, fixings and any lining in the comparison price. Heavy panels need appropriate support; an adhesive or tension solution must be explicitly rated for the intended use. Follow the product instructions rather than assuming a lighter-looking installation is suitable.
Think about the window you use every day
Check opening handles, inward-swinging sashes, radiators and ventilation paths. A blind that hits a handle or curtains that obstruct a heater can make an otherwise attractive purchase impractical. Follow the clearance guidance for nearby appliances and heating equipment.
Care requirements differ by fabric and mechanism. Read the label rather than expecting every blackout curtain to be machine washable. If you need frequent cleaning, easy removal may matter as much as the initial appearance. For a layered treatment, budget for both systems and ensure they can operate without catching each other.
When is spending more worthwhile?
Pay for better coverage and a verified fit before paying for decorative extras. A suitable basic blind can be enough if a small amount of edge light is acceptable. Curtains may be better value when existing hardware already permits generous overlap. Keep a working treatment if it blocks enough light for your preference; neither category promises a completely dark room in every installation.
