Quick verdict
Choose a hinged press when squeezing the handles and emptying a hopper suit you. Choose a rocker when you prefer downward pressure on a suitable board and a simpler open shape to rinse. Keep using a knife if you only prepare a little garlic and already like the result.

OXO stainless garlic press
Joseph Joseph silver Rocker

The best garlic tool is the one whose movement and cleanup you prefer repeating. Both designs crush cloves, but a press does it inside a chamber while a rocker works against a board. Neither is automatically easier for every hand or a substitute for every chopped-garlic recipe.
Compare the working method
| Question | Hinged OXO press | Joseph Joseph Rocker |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Squeeze handles | Press down and rock |
| Garlic collects | Outside the pressing screen | In the curved upper section |
| Main cleanup | Hopper, screen and moving parts | Perforations and curved surface |
When the press makes sense
The current cited stainless OXO has a large hopper and a swing basket for emptying. It is identified as dishwasher-safe. That can suit a cook who wants to press a few cloves directly over a receiving bowl without working them across a board.
Check the exact construction in the listing. OXO also has a die-cast zinc version with a different cleaning arrangement. A review or instruction for one should not automatically be applied to the other. Match the photographs, material and cleaning method before comparing prices.
When the rocker earns its place
Joseph Joseph’s silver Rocker uses downward pressure and a rocking motion; the crushed garlic gathers in its curved shape for scooping. The maker lists dishwasher care. It can appeal when you dislike enclosed hoppers and prefer a compact tool without squeezing a pair of handles.
You still need a suitable work surface and a way to transfer the garlic. Consider that complete sequence rather than assuming fewer moving parts means no cleanup. We have not measured required force, garlic yield or the size of the pieces from either tool.
What independent testing adds
Serious Eats’ garlic-press testing highlighted comfort and cleaning as practical differences and recommended an OXO press among its picks. That supports evaluating the handling routine, but it is not our own test and does not establish that every current OXO revision is identical to the tested item.
A crusher also produces a different result from carefully cutting garlic with a knife. Choose the preparation your recipe calls for. Buying a dedicated tool makes most sense when you regularly want crushed garlic, not when you mainly need slices.
Who should buy or skip?
Buy a press for its contained squeezing workflow or a rocker for the board-based motion. If grip comfort is the deciding issue, handle the actual tool or check return terms rather than relying on “easy” in its name. Skip the purchase when a sharp knife already handles your modest garlic preparation comfortably.
