When the lap desk is enough
LapGear lists a 21.1-by-12-inch surface intended for most laptops up to 15.6 inches, plus a ledge and mouse area. That can suit short tasks on a sofa when you want to pick up the whole surface and put it away afterward.
Check your laptop’s actual width and depth. Screen diagonal does not establish fit, especially if the chassis is larger than typical. Allow room for cables and for moving the mouse rather than measuring the computer alone.
When a legged tray earns its space
SONGMICS lists five tilt positions, adjustable leg height and a 22-pound maximum static load for the cited bamboo design. These features can help when you want the top above your legs and a different working angle.
The complete tray is much heavier than the cited LapGear. Consider where you will put it while getting up, whether the extended legs fit the seat or bed and how it folds for storage. A static load figure is not permission to move or lean on the tray as though it were fixed furniture.
Think through the complete laptop setup
Check the laptop maker’s ventilation requirements and keep the intended vents clear. Neither a cushioned base nor a bamboo top is proof that every computer will cool adequately in every position. A hard surface helps only when the actual airflow path remains usable.
Also consider viewing height and typing position together. Tilting a laptop changes both. If you need a separate keyboard, mouse or display support, include those items and their storage in the cost rather than treating the tray as a complete workstation.
