Quick verdict

Choose the 16 oz Stainless King if its included folding spoon and serving-bowl lid make packing lunch simpler. Choose the 17 oz SW-EAE50 if you prefer its compact jar format and will carry your own suitable utensil. Neither manufacturer’s heat-retention headline proves that your particular lunch stays at a safe temperature until you eat.

Who should buy or skip

Buy if: you regularly want a temperature-retaining container for an appropriate portion of soup or another meal and will follow a careful packing routine.

Skip if: you expect the jar to heat food, want to microwave the metal container or will rely on a claimed number of hours instead of appropriate food handling.

Compare the choices

Choice Choose it for Main tradeoff
Stainless King 16 oz Included folding spoon and serving-bowl lid More lid functions to clean and inspect
SW-EAE50 17 oz Compact jar with a 2.5-inch opening Plan a separate suitable utensil
Refrigerated container and reheating A workplace or home with suitable facilities Depends on refrigerator and heating access

Choose the portion and utensil together

Thermos lists 16 oz/475 ml for the Stainless King model and includes a folding spoon. Zojirushi lists 17 oz/0.5 L for SW-EAE50 and a 2.5-inch opening. These are nearby but not identical capacities.

Measure your normal portion in a jug before buying. The shape and depth matter when eating directly from a jar: a short spoon can be inconvenient even if it fits in the lunch bag. Check the complete package rather than assuming every insulated jar includes cutlery.

Heat-retention claims are not directly comparable tests

Thermos advertises hot and cold holding durations for its model. Zojirushi publishes a temperature after six hours under defined starting-water and room-temperature conditions. Those are different presentations, not a matched test showing one jar wins.

We have not tested food temperature in either product. Fill level, starting temperature, food type, room conditions and opening the lid can change the result. A jar bought for a small portion should still be selected and used according to its instructions.

Use food temperature, not a warm feeling

USDA guidance says hot lunches should stay at 140°F/60°C or above. It advises preheating a suitable insulated container with boiling water, emptying it and then adding piping-hot food, keeping the container closed until lunch. Follow the jar’s manual as well.

For perishable cold food, USDA specifies 40°F/4.4°C or below. Check holding performance with a food thermometer in your actual packing routine. An advertised maximum duration or food that feels warm to the hand is not a substitute for a safe temperature.

Inspect the parts you will wash every day

A lid seal is part of both containment and heat retention. Check how to remove, clean and reinstall the exact gasket without stretching or losing it. Thermos lists top-rack dishwasher care for the checked model; use Zojirushi’s exact manual for its components.

We have not measured leak resistance, odour retention or gasket life. Test assembly with cool water over a sink before carrying a meal, and check the availability of model-specific replacement parts. If prompt washing and proper packing will not fit the routine, a refrigerated lunch option may be more practical.

Questions before ordering

Can I microwave either metal jar?
No. Transfer food to an appropriate microwave-safe vessel and follow the food and appliance instructions.

Does ‘hot for hours’ mean food-safe for that long?
Not by itself. Follow safe preparation and temperature holding guidance and verify your actual routine with a food thermometer.

Final buying decision

Stainless King is the more convenient all-in-one consideration when the spoon and serving lid are useful. SW-EAE50 suits someone who prefers its jar format and already carries a utensil. Buy by portion, access and cleaning, and verify food temperatures rather than treating marketing duration as a guarantee.
