Quick verdict
Buy Umbra Buddy for a light interior door only after checking the gap and floor grip. Its main extra is the character-shaped design. Umbra lists a maximum one-inch clearance and excludes heavy doors. A plain suitable wedge is better value when appearance does not matter or you already have one that holds reliably.

Which option fits your routine?
| Choice | Choose it for | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Umbra Buddy | A decorative wedge for a suitable light door | Gap and grip limits still apply |
| Plain suitable wedge | Low-cost door holding | Less decorative |
| Appropriate heavy-door solution | A door outside Buddy’s intended use | Requires a different product assessment |
Measure at the actual holding position
Umbra specifies maximum clearance of one inch, or 2.54cm, between the floor and door base. Measure where you plan to hold the door, not only when it is shut: floor levels and coverings can change across its swing.
The doorstop’s overall height does not mean the full shape slides beneath the door. Its wedge portion has to engage the gap. If the base skims the floor or sits too high above it, an appealing product photograph is not enough to establish a useful fit.
Heavy doors are outside the recommendation
The manufacturer expressly says Buddy is not compatible with heavy doors. Do not interpret its soft rubber construction or broad shape as evidence that it can resist a strong closer. We have not measured holding force on any floor.
Use a doorstop only where holding the door open is appropriate. Do not wedge a door that must close for fire protection or building requirements. A decorative household accessory is not a substitute for an approved door-holding system in those situations.
Floor condition matters as much as the shape
Umbra describes soft-touch thermoplastic rubber and markets it as slip resistant across several surfaces. Those claims describe the intended design; they do not establish that it will grip every finish, rug edge or dusty floor.
Keep contact surfaces clean and assess the hold in normal use without leaving a vulnerable setup unattended. Avoid assuming non-marking language guarantees compatibility with every delicate finish. If your current wedge holds consistently without unwanted marks, replacement for appearance is optional.
A decorative object still occupies the walkway
Think about where the figure will project into the room and where you will place it when the door is closed. A visible shape can be easy to find, but can also sit where feet, a vacuum or a door edge regularly meet it.
A dedicated nearby storage spot makes any loose wedge easier to use. If the household routinely loses small doorstops, buying a more decorative one does not automatically solve that behavior. Decide whether Buddy’s look is a detail you actually want on the floor.
Our buying decision and country check
Choose Buddy when the door is light, the measured gap fits and its playful look is worth the premium over a suitable plain wedge. The linked variant is one dark-grey doorstop; check pack quantity instead of assuming a two-pack.
The Canadian page resolved to the correct product, but an active purchase offer was not confirmed during our check. Compare current regional offers and avoid paying a large import premium for a simple wedge. Skip it for a heavy door or a gap outside its stated limit.
Buying in the United States or Canada
The U.S. and Canadian buttons identify the one-pack dark-grey Buddy doorstop. The Canadian product page resolved correctly, but an active purchase offer was not confirmed when checked. Verify current availability, gap suitability, pack quantity, seller, delivered cost and returns. Umbra excludes heavy doors; do not buy this as a universal door-holding device.
