Quick verdict
Choose the Brother ADS-1300 for regular stacks of household or work documents. Choose the Canon imageFORMULA R10 when a compact scanner that folds away and a simple built-in scanning workflow matter more than rated speed. For occasional single receipts, try your phone before buying either.
Research-based buying guide, checked October 18, 2026. We have not tested these products hands-on. Manufacturer specifications and attributed outside findings are distinguished from our buying judgments.

Who should buy or skip
Buy if: you repeatedly scan loose, multipage paperwork and want an automatic document feeder.
Skip if: your main job is scanning bound books, fragile originals or high-quality family photographs; a sheet-fed document scanner is the wrong starting point.
Compare the choices
| Choice | Choose it for | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Brother ADS-1300 | Recurring batches and a faster advertised document rate | Software setup and compatible USB power still matter |
| Canon imageFORMULA R10 | A compact fold-away document workflow | Lower rated speed; not a photo specialist |
| Phone scanning app | A few individual pages | Manual positioning becomes tedious for stacks |
Will the speed difference save you time?
Brother rates the ADS-1300 at up to 30 pages per minute under its specified Letter-size, 300 dpi conditions. Canon rates the R10 at up to 12 ppm in black and white and 9 ppm in colour. These are manufacturer ratings, not our timed results; resolution and processing change the wait.
For a monthly folder of bills, sorting and naming files can take longer than the scan. For repeated large stacks, the Brother’s higher rating makes more sense. Count how many pages you actually scan each week before paying for unused speed.
Check the workflow before the footprint
Both manufacturers specify a 20-sheet feeder and two-sided scanning. A feeder capacity is not permission to push through stapled receipts, sticky notes or damaged pages. Remove attachments, straighten the stack and follow the paper specifications.
Canon’s CaptureOnTouch Lite is hosted on the scanner for a low-installation workflow. Brother offers downloadable scanning software. Check current support for your exact Windows or macOS release, especially on a managed work computer that restricts software or USB devices.
What independent use tells us
Digital Camera World’s original R10 review praised its portable document workflow but found photographic output too vivid and its highest-quality scanning slow. That supports using it for paperwork rather than choosing it to archive precious prints.
We have not compared these units hands-on. During a return period, scan a representative two-sided bill, a faint receipt and a mixed-size set. Open the saved PDF, check every page and test text search if your software offers OCR; a file existing does not prove it is readable.
The hidden cost is finishing the filing
Make a folder structure before the first large scan: year, topic and a consistent date-first filename are usually enough. Keep a separate backup and confirm the copy opens before discarding originals you are allowed to discard.
Check the actual USB connection and power requirements against your laptop or dock, including the included cable. Neither purchase should be based on an assumption that USB power also means wireless scanning. Allow room for paper entering and exiting, not just the closed scanner.
Buying in the United States or Canada
US and Canadian listings can mix new, refurbished and imported units. Compare the ADS-1300 with the imageFORMULA document scanner R10, not Canon’s EOS R10 camera. Check the regional software downloads, supplied cable and applicable support before ordering.
The buttons open the named country’s Amazon search results. Match the exact model, size and included parts before ordering. Compare delivered cost, seller and return terms; no fixed price, availability or warranty eligibility is promised.
Questions before ordering
Can either scan books?
Their sheet-fed design is intended for loose compatible pages. Choose a flatbed or an overhead solution for bound material.
Should I scan everything at 600 dpi?
Use a setting that preserves the information you need. Higher resolution increases file size and can slow processing; test normal documents before committing a whole archive.
Final buying decision
The ADS-1300 is our practical pick for frequent document batches; the R10 is the more appealing choice when compact storage and a straightforward portable workflow lead the decision. Buy neither until you have checked operating-system support and tried scanning a small sample with your existing equipment.
