Stability and portability are different priorities
Umbra gives Squire an integrated top handle and a side tear bar. OXO describes a weighted base, non-slip contact and a carrying knob on its Steady countertop model. Neither description alone tells us how the holder will behave on your specific surface.
If you carry towels between a table and kitchen, handle access may matter most. If the holder stays beside the sink and is tugged repeatedly, base stability has a clearer role. We have not tested either with wet hands, polished stone or your preferred towel brand.
Measure the largest roll you buy
Check the roll diameter and height, not only the centre tube. Squire is roughly 6.5 inches across; OXO lists its Steady at 8.1 x 7.8 x 14.5 inches overall. Compare the exact selected model and allow room around the outside of the loaded roll.
A larger holder can be justified if it keeps your normal jumbo roll contained. It can be wasteful if it takes space you need for food preparation. Place a paper outline on the counter before buying and check whether it interferes with cupboard doors or outlets.
One-handed tearing is a real-world fit question
OXO markets Steady for one-handed tearing, while Squire uses its tear bar to assist dispensing. Paper thickness, perforations, remaining roll size and pull direction can change the result. A nearly empty roll may behave differently from a fresh one.
Try both a new roll and a partly used one within a return period if practical. If the base slides or several sheets unwind at once, do not assume you need a more expensive product before checking the roll fit and using the intended tearing direction.
Think about cleaning underneath and nearby water
A paper towel holder can collect kitchen splashes and crumbs around its base. Choose a location away from persistent water and clean the holder according to its instructions. Stainless steel and a metal-looking finish are not proof of identical coatings or care.
